Mariya Borysova is a Ukrainian contemporary artist, based in London, UK.
She explores the facets of female nature, motherhood, sacrifice and freedom.
Her works search for wonder in the simplest, most familiar subjects. Both physical and otherworldly light pass through her paintings. Her style borders realism and symbolism and references Ukrainian folk ornaments and floral Dutch still life. Mariya uses a mix of modern technologies and the Flemish Technique of multi-layered oil painting.

I started this piece a year ago for art therapy, just to draw a big sun-sunflower that will drive away all the darkness.
And it turned out to have a multi-layered meaning. Here is our contrasting reality, and memories of the meadows near Vovchansk (Ukrainian town on the border with Russia), where my children played, hiding in the wheat. There are also Christian symbols, such as the Crucifix, Calvary and Adam's skull, as a hint of the path that Ukraine is currently taking
