Mariya Borysova is a Ukrainian contemporary artist, based in London, UK.
She explores the facets of female nature, motherhood, sacrifice and freedom.
Her works search for wonder in the simplest, most familiar subjects. Both physical and otherworldly light pass through her paintings. Her style borders realism and symbolism and references Ukrainian folk ornaments and floral Dutch still life. Mariya uses a mix of modern technologies and the Flemish Technique of multi-layered oil painting.
The war divided many families and divided life into "before" and "after". In this work, I wanted to recreate the chasm that lay between many people now in Ukraine, sometimes it is impossible to know what is with another person if he is in captivity or under occupation, sometimes the abyss cannot be overcome if your loved one is no longer alive. Letters, prayers, and lots of love fly through that chasm.
